Commuting
If you are a bike commuter in the Roswell area or interested in being one please email us and let us know where you commute to and from or where you need to commute to and from. We might be able to match you with other commuters already traveling that area.
As you are sitting in your car in traffic and hating your 10 mile commute that takes you nearly an hour, you pass by the gas station and notice the astronomical price of gas when you are suddenly passed by a cyclist. Then the idea hits you…Why can’t I do that? For those of you that don’t ride bicycles for recreation the thought has probably never crossed your mind. For those of us who spend all of our free time on our bicycles for recreation, we haven’t been motivated enough to figure out the logistics of becoming a bicycle commuter. As an added incentive to commute by bike, you may be eligible to receive up to $20 per day from your employer and/or $3 per day from the Clean Air Campaign.
If you are in the metro Atlanta area and live 10 to 20 miles from work, bicycle commuting is a very feasible alternative. Figuring out the safest route is the hardest part. For this task, use the biking directions option on Google Maps (Instructions) or Map My Ride.
The next is getting a commuter bike outfitted with the proper gear to make your ride safe. Bicycle commuting also requires some advance planning, such as putting together your clothing for the week. Many commuters drive their cars to work on Monday, loaded with all the things they’ll need for the week (clothing, toiletries. etc.) and then ride their bicycle the rest of the week. Then, Friday afternoon, drive their cars home with all the things they’ll need to change out. This way, if you have an appointment or errand that requires driving from the office, your car is there during the week.
Another thing that needs to be considered is whether or not you have access to shower facilities at your workplace. If not, some commuters will join a nearby gym in order to use their showers and lockers. Some clubs will give you a reduced rate for this access. Otherwise, access to a restroom, a toiletry kit, wash cloth and towel are all you need. If nothing else, isopropyl alcohol swabs and a little cologne or perfume work wonders.
Once you’ve covered these areas, you’re ready to give it a shot. Hopefully you’ll find that you arrive to work energized after a nice workout, save money on all of the gas you’re not using, and are on your way to being in the best shape of your life.
