BIKE ROSWELL! LAUNCHES NEW EVENT IN APRIL TO CONVERT CANTON STREET INTO ONE-DAY PUBLIC PARK

Registration Begins for 15th Annual Bike Roswell! Mayor’s Ride

Taking Place with Open Streets Event

ROSWELL, Ga. (Feb. 22, 2018) – Streets are traditionally filled with cars and trucks, allowing for restricted movement between destinations. What if these wide, flat spaces could be turned into zones for unrestricted movement, allowing access for biking, walking, or even dancing? Bike Roswell! and the City of Roswell will launch the first “open streets” program in the city on Sunday, April 29 with the Roswell Moves! event.

A five-block section of Canton Street in historic downtown Roswell, from the south end of Canton Street to Webb Street, Elizabeth Way, Norcross Street, the New East Alley, Plum Street and North Canton Street. Activities will take place from 11 a. m. to 3 p.m., while roads will close to motorized vehicles from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This innovative experience encourages people to explore the community by walking, pedaling, rolling, and even playing. While some vendors will be permitted in this area, attendees are encouraged to experience and savor the offerings provided by local merchants in this corridor. Live music presented by Atlanta Plays It Forward will be located at two stages along Canton Street near Highway 9 and on North Canton near Woodstock Road.

Using a formula that has been in practice since the 1970s in major cities across the globe, Roswell Moves! aims to promote:

  • active lifestyles
  • alternate modes of transportation
  • positive environmental impacts
  • positive economic impacts

“Open streets programs stress the word ‘open’. Communities can turn a street into a temporary park, using this car-free space for people of all ages and abilities to flow freely in an urban area. We want to encourage people to visit and wander in historic Roswell with a new perspective,” said Lise Walker, President of the Board of Directors for Bike Roswell!, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization promoting safe cycling. “Roswell Moves! will take place on the Sunday which we have held the criterium bicycle races in the past. Bike Roswell!’s goal is to transition from the Criterium to a more community-focused event that has potential to better engage the general public and local businesses in an actively, fun environment.”

A festival for cycling began in 2002 as the Historic Roswell Criterium. One of the anchor events created in 2003, the Bike Roswell! Mayor’s Ride, will continue as part of the new Roswell Moves! festivities this year. This full-supported, recreational bike ride will offer distances of 18, 42 and 64 miles, all routes beginning at 8 a.m. from Roswell Area Park. Lunch will be provided for all participants, sponsored by Lucky’s Burger & Brew and Red Hare Brewery. The Mayor’s Ride is the largest fundraiser of the year for Bike Roswell!. Early registration is available online with a discounted fee of $35 per rider available through March 31 (www.bikeroswell.com/rides-maps/mayorsride). T-shirts will be provided to the first 500 pre-registered riders.

In addition to the Mayor’s Ride, the Historic Roswell Kiwanis will continue to hold its annual Kids’ Bicycle Safety Rodeo. The event is free, with signed waiver, for children ages six to 12 years to learn bicycle skills and safety tips. Since 2002, the popular Historic Roswell Kiwanis Kids’ Bicycle Safety Rodeo has positively impacted more than 2,400 children. The Historic Roswell Kiwanis Kids’ Bicycle Safety Rodeo is co-sponsored by the Key Clubs of Centennial High School, Milton High School, and Roswell High School, and by the Builders Clubs of Crabapple Middle and Elkins Pointe Middle Schools.

“We are proud to have support for Roswell Moves! from the City of Roswell. Our local business partners are Roswell Bicycles, who has helped every year since 2002, and WellStar Health System, the largest health system in Georgia,” added Walker about early enthusiasm for Roswell Moves!. “We look forward to announcing more details about the event in coming weeks.
