ROSWELL, Ga. (Mar. 3, 2020) – Five blocks of Canton Street in historic Roswell will be converted into a car-free park on Sunday, April 26. Back for a third year, Roswell Moves! is an “open streets” event, transforming the pavement into an urban playground. Bike Roswell!, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, manages the event, with substantial support from the City of Roswell and sponsors. Top Job Beverage & Events has joined the movement as a presenting sponsor for 2020.
Festivities will begin at 8 a.m. with the Bike Roswell! Mayor’s Ride, a recreational bicycle ride with options from 18 to 64 miles. It is the 16th year for the recreational bicycle ride, which begins and ends at Roswell Area Park. Canton Street, from Heart of Roswell Park to Woodstock Road, will close to vehicular traffic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will take on the pavement, sidewalks and yards in this area from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A registration fee is required for the Mayor’s Ride, while admission is free for other Roswell Moves! activities.
“Roswell Moves! is a fun event for the whole family. This event has something for everyone from the Mayor’s Ride which kicks off Roswell Moves! to live music and a kids’ bicycle safety rodeo. I invite everyone to join me for some exercise and a lot of fun,” said Roswell Mayor Lori Henry, who plans to ride her bicycle in the Bike Roswell! Mayor’s Ride again this year.
Roswell Moves! Activities
Roswell Moves! is an innovative experience that provides activities, demonstrations and games to promote healthy lifestyles for the entire family. People, and their pets, are encouraged to explore the community by dancing, jumping, rolling, stretching, twirling, rolling, and walking. There are lots of opportunities for eating, drinking and shopping as well. Live music will be provided on two stages by Atlanta Plays it Forward and Rock ’N' Taco.
A Family Bike Parade will kick off activities at 11 a.m. All wheels are welcome as Bike Roswell! leads the parade from the Heart of Roswell Park to Woodstock Road and back. Participants must wear a helmet and bring their own pedal-powered vehicles.
The Historic Roswell Kiwanis Kids’ Bicycle Safety Rodeo will take place on East Alley Pathway from 12-3 p.m. There is an organized "class" where children ages six to 12 learn about cycling safety and bicycle handling skills. Children must provide their own helmets and bicycles, which are inspected by the mechanics from Roswell Bicycles. After the class, the children will navigate a small obstacle course to demonstrate new skills. All children who complete the rodeo will be certified to ride the REI pump track.
Businesses located along the Canton Street corridor are invited to register as a Route Host. This event participant option permits a business to get involved beyond the storefront and sidewalk by engaging attendees with demonstrations and product promotions. Two other event participant options available are Activity Partner and Event Sponsor. All Activity Partners must provide quality activities that align with the event mission to promote wellness, transportation options, and community engagement. The online application is now OPEN!
Roswell Moves! Partners
Top Job Beverage & Events is the newest partner for Roswell Moves! in 2020, joining Red Hare Brewing Company. Top Job will be selling beverages along the Canton Street route, featuring Red Hare Brewing Company's lineup of craft beers. Other businesses are invited to participate, with three ways to get involved this year. Applications are available online until March 31. The review committee from Bike Roswell! is looking for quality activities that fit with our mission of health, wellness and civic pride. A customized Route Host category is being offered for businesses located along the Canton Street corridor to get attendees beyond the storefront and sidewalk for better engagement. Two other event participant options, Activity Partner and Event Sponsor, allow businesses and organizations to promote health and wellness along the Canton Street route. The online application is available at bikeroswell.com/roswellmoves/activitypartner/.
Bike Roswell! Mayor’s Ride
Experienced cyclists can start the day at 8 a.m. with the Bike Roswell! Mayor’s Ride from Roswell Area Park, 10495 Woodstock Road. This full-supported, recreational bicycle ride offers three ride options - 18, 42 and 64 miles. The 18-mile option returns with a flat route along the Chattahoochee River, which eliminates the previous climbs in the Martin’s Landing subdivision. Participants receive pre-ride mechanical support from Roswell Bicycles, refreshments at rest stops from Trader Joe’s Roswell, and a post-ride lunch sponsored by Lucky’s Burger & Brew and Red Hare Brewing Company. Individuals who register before April 10 will qualify for a complimentary event T-shirt. Early packet pickup events will be held at Lucky’s Burger & Brew (Apr. 24 6:30-8:30 p.m.) and Roswell Bicycles (Apr. 25 2-4 p.m.).
Online registration is discounted through March 31 for $40 per person, any route option. In April, online registration is $50 per rider; it will be $60 to register in person on April 26 at Roswell Area Park (http://www.bikeroswell.com/rides-maps/mayorsride/). All proceeds benefit Bike Roswell!, making this the largest fundraiser of the year for the local advocacy group. Individuals who register online will qualify for discounts on cycling-specific Yoga classes at Korsi Hot Yoga, a Roswell Moves! Activity Partner. Bike Roswell! members receive an additional $10 discount on registration fees (log in as a member prior to registration to receive discount).
